So today we went down there today mainly just to get some more of the greenhouse put together. We got most of it done, we have a bit more to do tomorrow but I think one more day putting it together, it should be done. Then we can get the inside of it sorted, benches put back in and get some plants growing in there.

So today we went down to the allotment just to put together some of the green house. We have decided to use some of the old polycarbonate from the old green house on the back wall of the green house. so the back is now done as you can see from the gallery pictures. One side we have started on now is just the glass. We will be going down again tomorrow, but not sure if we will be able to do any more to the green house as well need to get some more putty to help hold the glass in to the frame, so probably just weeding and planting tomorrow.
We heard a while ago, that someone on our site was giving up their plot, and guess what??? They have a nice big green house there, so we asked if they would mind us taking it when they left (we told them the story about ours blowing away) and the said we could have it if we could move it. So today we went down mainly to clear it out. We got 4 different staging out of there and a few other things along with some really nice paving slabs.
Tomorrow the real work begins, a couple of friends are helping us to take out the glass and then lift it past a shed and then over a water tank. So your wondering why I called this thread Weeds, weeds and more weeds. Well, after clearing the green house, we did a hell of a lot of weeding. The weeds seem to be growing at a faster rate than we can pull them out. Well, just got back from the plot.
Just mainly watered down there today and picked some more strawberries and a few handfuls of red currants. Dug up a couple more onions as well, so now I stink of onions, lol. Just come back from the allotment, the wind is terrible down here and as a result, we have totally lost our green house. £350 down the drain. as you could guess, I cried my eyes out.
Think that's enough said already. Yes,I know I haven't posted anything for ages, bad me.
The weather has warmed up considerably and there is loads of things to get done down at the plot. We have loads of seedlings sitting in the green house just waiting to be put in, the weeds and grass are growing at a faster rate than the plants it seems. I managed to get the canes up ready for the runner beans and they will be going in tomorrow with a big handful of organic matter to give them a damn good feeding. We have a regular visitor to our plot, he is a very brave little sod, I bet you are wondering what it is, well, its a little robin. The other day, I was weeding and he came and sat on the tip of my foot and just yesterday he flew passed me so close, I actually felt his wings touch my arm. It is so hot down there, I managed to get a really bad sun burn on my arms, the back of my neck and face yesterday, I am suffering, but that didn't stop me from going down there again today for a couple of hours (this time I put on sun screen) We now have the green house all set up, it was a pain and a half, as our friends will tell you, but its up and ready to be used.
Also put together a nice little steel potting bench that we got with the package deal, and is now in the greenhouse. We didn't get much else done today as we didn't get down there until late this afternoon. More rain is forecast for tonight and tomorrow which isn't going to help with our outdoor swimming pool we already have. The weather managed to ease off a bit today, which is just as well cause ...... we got our new greenhouse today.
On a really bad note though, after all that rain we have had, bed 2 and 4 are totally flooded. Luckily, we have nothing in bed 4 right now, but bed 2 is totally full of spuds that have been trenched. So we have no idea if they are going to be ok or not. It is hard to see 2 days work of trenching and planting going down the drain, but you never know, they may not have rotted, they could be the best crop of spuds that any one has ever had (well, here's hoping). I will be taking the camera down tomorrow when we finish off constructing the greenhouse so you guys can see what everything looks like (I know, I have been really lacking with the camera just lately, but I am sure I will make it up to you). The weather has been so bad here, rain everyday, but, we did manage to get down there this afternoon and get a bit of weeding done. The onions a swelling up very nicely and should be ready to start harvesting in the next month or 2. Got some more onion sets today and will be putting them in once the weather eases up a little.
With all the wind just recently the broad beans are looking a bit flattened, I think that when the weather improves, I might try and construct some sort of support for them as they are being blown down too much. Should be getting a greenhouse within the next week or so which is great news, means that we should be able to clear some space from the windowsill which is still packed with propagators and plant pots. Well, due to crappy weather all week, we have not managed to get down the allotment at all, Well, apart from a BBQ yesterday which went well at first, but then the rain came in and we had to run for it.
Needless to say though, we have managed to do some more sowing though, mainly runner beans in toilet roll tubes. They are all on the windowsill in the front room. Our next door neighbour gave us a Goji berry plant which is going to be going into the ground soon. We have taken a bit off it to see if we can get a cutting as well, 2 plants for the price of 1. |
